home presentation aims and rationale origin of sonel scientific & technical partners observations tide gauges gps stability of the datums doris absolute gravimetry station management products (demonstrative) sea level trends vertical land movements horizontal land movements waves programmes (gloss) global sea level observing system (gloss) psmsl tiga cgps@tg users applications publications statistics documentation partners & contacts gnss data providers sonel contacts station manager only -- or ulr authentication sonel -- news 2018 dec 10-14: agu session g015 dedicated to gnss at tide gauges (12 july 2018) 2–4 july 2018: sea level futures workshop, liverpool (abstract deadline 30 march) (13 march 2018) 13-15 march 2018 : workshop on sea-level measurements in hostile conditions (8 février 2018) ↓ see previous news ↓ welcome to sonel sonel aims at providing high-quality continuous measurements of sea- and land levels at the coast from tide gauges (relative sea levels) and from modern geodetic techniques (vertical land motion and absolute sea levels) for studies on long-term sea level trends, but also the calibration of satellite altimeters, for instance. sonel serves as the gnss data assembly centre for the global sea level observing system ( gloss ), which is developed under the auspices of the ioc/unesco. it works closely with the psmsl and the university of hawaii sea level center ( uhslc ) by developing an integrated global observing system, which is linking both the tide gauge and the gnss databases for a comprehensive service to the scientific community. it also acts as the interface with the scientific community for the french tide gauge data. observations tide gauges tide gauges gps gps doris doris leveling leveling sea and land levels at the coast other products new station cgps@tg survey form help us to have the most complete and updated database additional information on tide gauges coastal tide gauges have provided data on the sea level sometimes for almost two centuries. they were originally deployed for the purposes of navigation and the prediction of tides, but their field of application has been extended considerably from coastal engineering and development to the precise knowledge of variations in sea level related to extreme weather events (e.g. storms, tsunamis) and to climate change, of which sea level is an essential parameter. r. chazallon (1802-1872), a french hydrographic engineer, was the first to introduce them in france in 1843. tide gauge is not really an apropriate term since a tide gauge does not actually mesure the tide but rather the sea level, the tide being only one of the phenomena which result in sea level variations. today, tides are well enough understood and the observations of sufficient quality to allow scientists to focus on other phenomena which result in fluctuations of sea level (see applications tab). while satellite radar altimetry has been revolutioning our understanding of the oceans, there has been an unprecedented increase in the use of tide gauges over the last twenty years, both in terms of the technology and the applications. the increased need for coastal observations of sea level in digital form and easily accessible using modern means of communication, goes beyond the traditional boundaries of hydrography, tide prediction and navigation. hauteurs d’eau à la rochelle (février 2010) of course tide gauges are still widely used today for the purposes of navigation close to the coast, but the data they provide are increasingly used in numerous other applications which are employed to study the environment and the physical mechanisms which govern it, together with coastal development. the figure to the right illustrates the variety of signals contained in tide gauge recordings. by subtracting our knowledge of the tide (prediction by the model) from the observation, we obtain a "residual" (observation minus prediction) whose scientific and practical value may be considerable in areas other than navigation or hydrography. some additional tide gauge applications . concepts and definitions related to tide gauges. the rescue and digitisation of historical tide gauge data constitutes a further important source of sea level data, particularly since france has a wealth of stations and data (see the online inventory by shom or appendix a of the phd thesis of n.pouvreau ) which is testimony to a past that cannot be revisited (to perform measurements) but which is interesting to study in order to understand the changes in sea level that occur today.
